Pauline Moran
Pauline, a Nyoongar woman, was born on 27 May 1959 and grew up in Gnowangerup, Western Australia. Like so many of her generation, as a child she was removed from her family and placed in Roelands Mission near Collie. In the late nineties she completed formal art school training. A few years ago Pauline moved to Alice Springs. Since 1997 she has exhibited throughout Australia, in both major state and commercial galleries.
Like many desert artists who work in and around Alice Springs, Pauline’s subject focus is the land and landscapes. What distinguishes her from that artistic community is that her canvases do not follow the conventions of dot painting and central desert iconography. Instead, her work appears to sit more comfortably within the Western tradition of landscape art and figurative representation.
The western representation of landscapes she must have seen as a child on the Mission, and many years later in art school. This relationship undoubtedly informs her work to some extent but the work she creates today goes far beyond that early influence.
Pauline’s landscapes are primarily painted from an aerial perspective as her flights between Western Australia and the Northern Territory have provided both inspiration and material.
