Vanessa Russ
Vanessa Russ is a contemporary artist from the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Her artwork has recently featured in Mundaring Arts Centre’s Third Space exhibition (2013) and the Revealed: Emerging Aboriginal Artists from Western Australia exhibition (2011). Vanessa graduated from the College of Fine Acts (‘COFA’) in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons), and has recently submitted a PhD in Art History/Theory at the University of Western Australia in 2013. The artworks featured here are part of Vanessa’s Portraits of Landscape series.
Vanessa’s works are about memory, particularly memories of home and where we come from. Though Vanessa has lived in different states and on a different continent, her memory lives in the Kimberley. These works from the ‘Portraits of Landscape Series’ were some of Vanessa’s first encounters with memory in art making. Through them, Vanessa wanted to capture her river memory. That is, the sounds, sights, and shapes of the river of her home in the Kimberley.
